The Hauntings of Hollywood

If you’re a regular reader of Scared Yet, it only makes sense that you’re probably a horror movie fan as well! A good horror movie is a delight, offering us all the thrills of terrifying things with the comfort of understanding that nothing shown within is real. However, we need to remember that movies come from somewhere, and at the end of the day, Hollywood is just as haunted as the rest of the United States.

Whether they are actors, directors, stunt men or producers, Hollywood has its own hidden sides, and some of the ghosts don’t rest so easy…

The Curse of the Joker

Hollywood 1

Heath Ledger was a promising actor who was poised to make the leap from young heartthrob to dramatic film star. He had stretched in Brokeback Mountain, but what the public was yearning to see was his work in The Dark Night, the second Batman movie in the Nolan trilogy. His take on the Joker turned out to be one of the darkest ever seen. To prepare for the role, he shut himself up in his hotel room for weeks, working with the character that was designed to have more than a few screws loose.

Ledger’s death was ruled to be an accidental drug overdose, but more than one source has suggested that spending that much time in Joker’s head, with the Joker in his own head as well, had more than a little to do with the actor’s death.

When informed of Ledger’s death, Jack Nicholson, who had played the Joker as well, made a single chilling comment before changing the subject:

“Well, I warned him.”

Haunted Mansion Ride

Hollywood 2

The Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland is a fantastic place for chills and screams, but if you ask any Disneyland employee, it’s prety clear that some of those screams aren’t faked. There are recurring rumors of two ghosts running along the ride. Both are young boys, and one is crying while the other is laughing. This seems odd until you remember that every year, people try to dump the ashes of their loved ones during the ride. Maintenance workers report strange lights, flickering cold spots and eerie feelings as they clean up.

The Omen

Hollywood 3

As horror films go, the movie The Omen was quite good. It recounted the tale of the birth of the Antichrist, and as the film progressed, it devolved into an dark and twisted tale of a young boy and his penchant for evil. The movie on its own is creepy enough, but the curse that followed the cast and crew was even spookier. The screenwriter’s plane was hit by lightning. Gregory Peck, the star of the show, was also on a plane that was hit by lightning. The executive producer’s plane was almost struck. Peck’s son committed suicide not long after and a special effects coordinator died in an car crash. Peck was booked for a plane to Israel, but at the last minute cancelled. The plan went on to crash, killing everyone on board.

Little Bastard

Hollywood 4

James Dean was famous for living hard and dying young. Drugs and alcohol killed him, but it would be just as easy to say that it was his car that did the deed. Dean drove a Porsche 550 Spyder that he affectionately called Little Bastard, and it seemed as if the car has never quite gotten over a taste for human death. Not long after Dean bought, actor Sir Alec Guinness told Dean, “If you get in that car, you will be found dead in it by this time next week.” Dean crashed the card just a few days later, and the parts that were taken from the car to use elsewhere maimed and killed their subsequent owners. What’s left of the original car is now mysteriously missing.
