Most people think of scary stories as things that are told around campfires and at slumber parties, but some of the best scary stories are found nowhere else but on the Internet. The Fear Mythos is a loose collection of blogs, stories and monsters that all revolve around the idea of being afraid. People love to scare each other, and some of these scares are so good that they can have you looking twice at the bathroom mirror as you pass in the middle of the night. Check out five of the best monsters from the Fear Mythos.

The Plague Doctor

Plague Doctor

Healthy people cannot quite understand how terrifying it is to be menaced from something inside of your own body. The Plague Doctor represents the fear of disease, and though he is not one of the most popular monsters of the Fear Mythos, he is definitely one of the most iconic. He takes the appearance of a Renaissance doctor, complete with beaked mask. During the 1700s, real doctors stuffed the nose with herbs to keep away smells they believed caused disease. The Plague Doctor of the Fear Mythos has no face beneath the mask, and all that is heard from him is a deep chuckle.

The Burning Bride

Burning Bride

Anger is an overwhelming force, and it is often described as burning someone from the inside out. The Burning Bride is a beautiful woman burning up from the inside out, and when she is nearby, people can smell smoke. She wears a white wedding dress, and instead of attacking the person she has chosen to torment, she instead strikes at their loved ones, the ones who provoke anger and then must suffer for it. She is also known as Our Lady of Conflagration

The Cold Boy

The Cold Boy

Are you alone? Are you sure? The Cold Boy is the fear of isolation. He looks like a little boy at first, and sometimes he wears that guise when he is trying to lure in his victims. However, if you touch him, your skin will crackle with cold and you will quickly see that he is not alive, that he was never alive. The Cold Boy looks innocent at first, but then you may start to wonder where he came from when you thought before that you were all alone.

The Servants

Servents

Instead of being fears themselves, the servants are people who have been overcome by the fears. They serve them, carrying out their bidding in the world. Some of them do not realize that they are servants, and others have given themselves over to the fears willingly. Some of them look perfectly human, while others are twisted beyond recognition. Perhaps the worst ones are the ones who look human… at first.

The Slenderman

Slenderman

The Slenderman came out of an Internet contest to create the creepiest thing possible, and in many ways, he is the grandfather of the Fear Mythos itself. He may be up to 14 feet tall and impossibly thin, and his head has no features at all. He is the most famous of the fears, and once he reveals himself to you, he will chase you forever, until you kill yourself, go insane or become one of his servants.
